And little Billy and Sue could get some new ideas for things to do to Rover and Fluffy. They were all flippin’ around and screamin’ and everything. I was just reading that this year three different horses actually died in that one. And best of all they could see the chuckwagon demolition derby.

Then they could watch those big ole steers havin’ their heads twisted around while they’re trying to get away so they fall over at full speed. They could see those cute little calves being roped and jerked off their feet and then being slammed to the ground to be all tied up. I think they’d really enjoy watching terrified animals being tormented. Hey honey, for our next vacation let’s take the kids to the Calgary Stampede. I have nothing but disdain for people who go to these events and allow the deaths to continue. Sadly the expressions on the faces of the fans at the race after the horses were killed seemed to be just mostly annoyance that they had to wait for the carnage to be cleared for the next race to start. Yes, the races should be stopped and the only way they probably will be stopped is if there is no audience. I am appalled by the latest “accident” at the chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede. It was good to seem him recover so quickly and without serious injury but the three horses are still dead.

The driver showed remorse at the loss of his horses during an interview, but shortly afterwards in another interview he seems to have completely recovered and was raring to go yet again. Chuckwagon racing has become as barbaric as tantalizing a bull to the point of complete exhaustion then thrusting the blade of a sword into the back of the animal’s neck to the delight of a delirious mob. Unbelievable!Įven more depressing, as long as we treat valued, well-groomed rodeo horses in such a manner, what chance in hell do wild animals at the lowest end of the “rights ladder” have, who suffer extremely cruel leg-hold traps and snares (which remain permissible for certain segments of Canada’s mostly northern territories’ populaces), who seemingly are on Earth for naught but to supply us with their useful and often quite valuable body parts?Īgain, unbelievably troubling and depressing for those of us who care.Ī cowboy tradition be damned. Obviously, our superior-minded nature allows our collective conscience to permit us to extremely exploit such animals - and often enough for naught but their fur/skin, our trophies or monetary gain.

The very troubling aspect of the gratuitous deaths of the entertainment-laboured Calgary Stampede horses is that they - as senseless and selfish as their suffering and/or demise were - are relatively amongst the most humanely treated animals by us (in)human beings. The Stampede catches national attention alright, but, mainly for the ongoing cruelty at its rodeo events. It isn’t right to put any animal, let alone the loyal and majestic horse, into such dangerous and violent situations. Every year, horses are injured, and frequently die in these fast, crowded spectacles. Shame on the Calgary Stampede for continuing chuckwagon racing in the wake of more horse deaths. To be sure, many of these still plague us today, but the question remains: Have we really progressed in some things over the intervening 2000 years? Such events remind one inevitably of the brutal chariot races of ancient Rome, part of the “bread and circuses” spectacles staged to distract a restless public from the social and other problems of the day.

I should like to add my voice to those protesting the abuse of horses in the Calgary Stampede, particularly in the chuckwagon races, the very nature of which will continue to ensure horrific collisions and the ensuing destruction of these unfortunate creatures.
